From the Salt Lake Tribune:
Friends of missing Utah woman Susan Powell ponder another flier campaign
Updated: 04/05/2010 04:23:33 PM MDT
A Saturday search for missing West Valley City mother Susan Cox Powell has been closed to the public, but friends of the 28-year-old woman may again canvass her neighborhood to raise awareness about her disappearance.
Kiirsi Hellewell, a friend of Powell, is gauging public interest for participation in another flier campaign on Saturday.
"We would like to pass out fliers in the neighborhood, going door to door in pairs, to show that we are still looking for Susan," Hellewell said, noting that a "social media blitz" launched in January brought in new tips and that additional fliers could also help bring in new information.
She said those participating in the search would gather after handing out fliers for Powell to eat dinner and share thoughts about Powell. Tuesday marks the four-month disappearance of Powell, who was last seen Dec. 6 and reported missing Dec. 7.
West Valley City police have named her husband, Joshua Powell, as the only person of interest in the case.
The latest potential flier campaign would provide an outlet to members of the public who had planned on participating in a search for Powell in Utah's west desert. That search, however, has now been limited to professionals.
A group of Cache County residents announced plans last month to search Saturday for Powell in Utah's west desert. The search area was to be near the region where Josh Powell told police he went camping with the couple's two young boys the night his wife disappeared.
Volunteers were to have been organized into teams and assigned an area to search. Search organizers over the weekend decided not to invite members of the public to search for Powell, according a news release from one of the search organizers, Jon Watkins, chief of the Bridgerland Fire Company.
The West Valley City Police Department and Tooele County Sheriff's Office have both said the area is dangerous and volunteer searchers may put themselves at risk going over an area already investigated.
Search organizers stated in the release that the Saturday's search will now be limited to trained professionals, and asked the public to stay away because of potential liability issues.
The news release states that "only professionally certified organizations with proper identification and pre-approval from the search organizers will be allowed to participate in the search." Potential qualified searchers are asked to contact susancoxpowellsearch@gmail.com or searchdonations@hotmail.com.
Hellewell said those who wish to participate in a flier campaign instead should visit the "Friends and Family of Susan Powell" page on Facebook or e-mail findsusanpowell@gmail.com.
She said she would make a final decision on whether the event will take place later this week.
